Just wandering, do you all take advantage of the services that your school provides for students with disabilities? And what types of services do you get? just wanted to know because every school district is different as far as providing services for students who are blind visual impairments.
I go to WMU and they are amazing. I transferred from a community college in the Detroit area and they had about a fourth of what WMU has. I can get my textbooks emailed to me and I am allowed to write out my answers on my computer for exams. This is extremely helpful when I have long essays. I can’t dictate anything to anybody b/c I change my mind and I like having papers perfect. I also can access on line library services and I can get a lot of scholarly articles emailed to me from the librarians. I can say that the internet makes life much easier for those of us w/ blindness and visual impairments. I have also found that other students are more than willing to help w/ reading Spanish and other materials that aren’t able to be scanned. Some of them don’t mind providing services for free and others ask for money. It’s worth it if a language is required and the textbook isn’t accessible. The bus systems out here are really good and the bus drivers are good about transfers. If you ride them enough they get to know you and remember your schedule.
I try to, but my teacher and I are patching up ties now, so, I am a little passive right now. I don’t necessarily want more fights. It’s awkward enough asking her for textbooks the Braille office has to Braille. It’s like it’s a great sin everytime I ask.
